A magnetic whiteboard that I use to jot down ideas and inspirations is hanging on the wall in my office. Currently there's a magnet on that whiteboard holding up a piece of paper with a quote from Steve Jobs on it. It says, "The people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do." Coming from someone who did change the world, that quote has a lot of credibility. But can it be proven? Science has actually shown that optimism has a profound impact on our mental and physical well-being. In fact, being optimistic will help a person problem solve, manage difficulties more efficiently, and become more productive. So it is largely true that you will make as much of a difference as you believe that you will.
I'm always amazed when I read Paul's claim in Colossians 1:23 that the gospel had been preached to every creature under heaven. His claim seems to be backed up, however, by some unfriendly Jews in Thessalonica which said, "These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus" (Acts 17:6, 7). Look at what can happen when the Holy Spirit unites with a handful of people who are filled with faith-based optimism! Don't you think it's time we turn the world upside down once again? Are you crazy enough to think that you can change the world? If so, you are just the one who God will use to do it.
