The Greatest Gift

On our wall as I was growing up was a simple plaque that said: "The greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother." The most important aspect of fatherhood, and parenting in general, is the relationship between husband and wife. This is true for two reasons. First, if a child grows up treated like it is the center of the universe, it will begin to think it is the center of the universe. Secondly, a child learns a lot about love and healthy relationships by watching its parents. By loving their mother a father can pass on a legacy of love to the next generation.

The late Joey and her husband Rory, country gospel singers, sang a song about a man falling in love with a woman. When asked by his fiancé if he thought they would make it, the man replies by saying that "My Granddad's still in love with my Grandma" and "My Dad still thinks my Mom's the sweetest thing he ever saw." The chorus then goes like this: "I come from a long line of love / When times get hard / We don't give up / Forever's in my heart and in my blood / You see I come from a long line of love." Through the prophet Jeremiah God says, "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee" (Jeremiah 31:3). As we accept the everlasting love of our Heavenly Father, let's reflect that love in the relationships God has blessed us with.

Determined to leave a legacy of love,
