The Winds of Strife

If you've been keeping up with the news at all, and even if you haven't, you've probably been shocked by recent events. It seems like every day there's another shooting. We have had mall shootings, police shootings, protest shootings, and police being shot, to name a few. Bomb threats and terrorism seem to be the norm and if we were to branch out to world news, the outlook would only get more grim. What is this world coming to? Are things just appearing to be worse because we now have the capability to hear about everything that happens in the world, or is our planet's safety spiraling downward?

In the book of Revelation, we read an interesting verse. "And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree" (Revelation 7:1). I believe that this is telling us that God's angels have actually been holding back the winds of strife (wind in prophecy often represents conflict) to protect everyone on this planet. There will come a time, however, when that protection will begin to lessen. Could that be happening now? In her book The Great Controversy, Ellen White describes the horrors surrounding the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, then she makes this statement: "The Saviour’s prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem is to have another fulfillment, of which that terrible desolation was but a faint shadow. In the fate of the chosen city we may behold the doom of a world that has rejected God’s mercy and trampled upon His law" (p. 36). As terrifying as this sounds, let's remember that Jesus promised a way of escape to His followers during the destruction of Jerusalem and that He will also provide a way of escape to His followers today. Let's make sure we have an abiding relationship with Him.

Clinging to my Savior,
