When I fly anywhere outside of my normal area I always take advantage of a service that Air Traffic Control provides called VFR Flight Following. What this means is that, even though I am still primarily responsible for my own safety and avoidance of clouds, mountains, towers, and other aircraft, Air Traffic Control will be keeping track of where I am and letting me know if there are any aircraft that may pose a threat to me. It also puts me on the same radio frequencies as most other traffic in my area including the airlines, so I have a better idea of what’s going on around me. On Sunday, Chelsea and I flew up to the Smithville Municipal Airport, the closest airport to Indian Creek Camp where our Ministers’ Retreat is this week. On our way here, we flew just south of Nashville, on the edge of the busy airspace surrounding the Nashville International Airport. It was extremely busy! There was nearly nonstop chatter on the radio with planes landing, taking off, and just passing through. The screen on my iPad, which shows other aircraft around me, was alive with blue arrows like ants. I would have been very nervous flying that route if I didn’t have the voice of Air Traffic Control in my ear, ready to tell me if I was in danger.

This experience reminds me of the verse in Isaiah where God says, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21). There are crazy things happening in our world today. There is danger all around us. It seems that everywhere we look there are temptations and pitfalls. But what a beautiful promise we have! Just like Air Traffic Control, the Holy Spirit is in your ear, ready to tell you if you are in danger. With Him following your life, you can be confident in continuing the course that He lays out for your life. How comforting that is!
